【Title】Politics of Education in Comparative Perspective: A Review of The Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind

Abstract: A towering figure in the early history of American political development and political thought, Thomas Jefferson regarded the founding of the University of Virginia as one of the three most significant achievements in his life. In 2021, during the university’s bicentennial celebration, Andrew Jackson O’Shaughnessy, Professor of History at the University of Virginia, published The Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind: Thomas Jefferson’s Idea of a University , the most recent exploration of the relationship between the founding of the university and Jefferson’s political career and political thought. Arguing that not enough attention has been paid to an important dimension of the book—comparisons and connections between the University of Virginia and other institutions of higher education—this review examines the comparisons and connections between the University of Virginia and Harvard University in the book and explores how they embody Jefferson’s unique political thought and educational ideals.
